Welcome to Dead Ops Arcade.
Call of Duty is for so many all about precision first-person shooting, but in Black Ops, out now, there’s another perspective from which you can get your gun on: top-down.
Dead Ops Arcade is a top-down arcade shooter mini-game accessible only if you type the correct commands into a terminal in the main menu screen area.
After breaking free of your bonds (mash the triggers), head over to the terminal and enter DOA using the virtual keyboard to trigger the mini-game.

Nintendo’s home console knocks off DS from top spot to set new sales record in Australia.
Despite Nintendo’s recent profit drops and industry talk of the Wii’s flagging momentum, it’s hard to ignore the impact that the console has had on the global games industry since its launch in December 2006. The proof is in the numbers: earlier this year, Nintendo announced that the Wii has attained global lifetime sales of 75.9 million units, with an install base of 10.8 million units in Japan, 35.9 million in the USA, and 29.2 million in other territories.
Now, aided by a recent price drop in April this year, Nintendo Australia has sold 2 million Wiis Down Under. According to the publisher, which collected the sales data from retail partner reporting, this milestone was achieved in 47 months, a new record that establishes the Wii as the fastest-selling home console in Australia. This title was previously held by the publisher’s handheld console–the Nintendo DS–which, according to Nintendo, sold 2 million units in Australia in 52 months.
The Wii is available in Australia in black and white colours for a suggested retail price of AU$299.95, and it includes a copy of Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, as well as a Wii Remote Plus controller and a Nunchuk controller.

Following 27.5% drop in sales, Kenji Matsubara announces plans to step down for personal reasons; Koei co-founder Yoichi Erikawa taking over.
Today Tecmo Koei reports its earnings for the six months ending September 30, 2010. According to a translation by Japanese gaming blog Andria Sang, the period saw sales fall 27.5% to ¥11.1 billion ($136.3 million). The company’s operating loss more than tripled, going from ¥349 million ($4.3 million) to ¥1.1 billion ($13.6 million).
The company’s game division was the biggest money loser, reporting a loss of ¥1.6 billion ($19.7 million). That loss took away profits made by the company’s other sectors, including amusement facilities and merchandising. Company officials reportedly blamed the shortfall on development costs for future titles and a delay of the action role-playing game Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll.
Tecmo Koei’s sharp losses were almost overshadowed by some boardroom drama. Kenji Matsubara, the president and CEO of Tecmo Koei Holdings, announced at a board meeting that he is resigning for personal reasons. Matsubara is also stepping down as president and CEO of the Tecmo Koei Games label. He will reportedly be replaced in all four positions by Yoichi Erikawa, co-founder of Koei.

Retailer: Move will come 2nd this holiday.
After less than a week on sale, US retailer GameStop has picked Kinect as the first round winner in the Great Motion Controller War of 2010.
When asked whether Microsoft’s Kinect add-on or Sony’s Move would come out on top this Christmas, senior VP of merchandising and marketing Bob McKenzie told Eurogamer, “I’d say right now Microsoft’s Kinect is looking to be the winner of the two for us.
“We’re very happy with the sell through over the weekend. It has met our expectations and actually exceeded our initial forecasts.”

We’re sure there’s a reason that Microsoft locked down Kinect to keep it away from hackers who would use it for their own nefarious, open-source ends, we just can’t figure it out. Why even try when it’s going to be cracked within days? …

Valve: Multiplayer not necessary, Portal 2’s story taking a different route from the first (Portal 2)
Nov 9, 2010Valve are a bloody interesting company. Their games are interesting, their ideas are interesting, and whenever they talk about what they’re up to, it’s always very, very interesting.
So I was mighty (yes) interested to read a new interview with Valve Project Manager Erick Johnson. It’s an exciting and in-depth talk about all things Portal 2, so obviously you need to check it out by default, but it reveals some important points in regards to Valve’s stance on the current-gen domination of online multiplayer over single-player story. Personally, I stand very much in the latter camp, so I was really heartened to hear one of my favourite devs backing me up. Check out my selected quotations and tell me what you think. …
